For the last 17 years, we have lived off-the-grid. We are one of only a few off-grid homes/farms here on island. We do not have any connection to the “BC HYDRO” power grid. We are independent of any and all power failures that happen frequently here on the Island. We have two systems for generation of energy, Solar and Wind. We store all the power in huge batteries and/or use energy as it comes in when we are home. We hope to upgrade our current system with more solar panels and more windmills. When we are home the horses, Shamrock, Diamond and Tiffinay wander around the 80 acres on their own. We only limit them when we go away for the day or the spring time. All the fencing was hand-dug, post by post by Sonya. We run a 12V electric fence wire to keep the horses in the pastures. It has a solar panel for charging and battery for storage. Our Dome home is the most efficient building for heating and cooling and it has the heaviest snow load per square inch. When we get winter storms, we are safe and secure from power outages and warm with wood heat.
